The story behind Ploy Law

Ploy Law was founded in Bangkok with a particular kind of family in mind — one navigating the end of a partnership, the renegotiation of financial arrangements, or the coordination of children's lives across households. These are situations that carry significant weight, and they deserve legal support that takes that weight seriously.

The practice grew out of a recognition that family legal matters are often handled in ways that feel more adversarial than necessary. Many families come to us having already been caught in a process that moved faster than they were ready for, or that left them with documents they didn't fully understand. We work differently. We slow down where slowing down serves the client. We write things out in plain language. We make sure you understand your position before anything is filed or signed.

Bangkok presents a particular set of considerations for families in legal transition. The city is home to a large international community, and many families have ties — through nationality, assets, or former residence — that stretch across more than one country. Thai family law applies in different ways depending on these factors, and coordination with the law of another jurisdiction is sometimes necessary. We have worked within this landscape for many years and understand its practical implications well.

Our approach to the work is straightforward: we listen carefully, we advise clearly, and we stay in communication throughout. If something is outside our area of work, we'll say so plainly and point you toward the right place. We'd rather be useful within a defined scope than vague about a wider one.

Our values in practice

We begin with questions, not assumptions

Every family's situation has details that matter. We take time with intake conversations because understanding your specific circumstances is what allows us to advise you well — not a generalised sense of what these situations usually look like.

We commit things to writing

Verbal advice has its limits. Where we advise, we write. Written summaries give you something to re-read when the conversation has passed, something to share with a trusted person, and a record of what was agreed. That matters when the stakes are this high.

Confidentiality is not negotiable

What you share with us stays with us. Legal professional privilege applies to all our communications. We don't discuss client situations with parties outside the office, and we don't share anything without your clear understanding and consent.

Clarity over complexity

Legal language can obscure as easily as it clarifies. We write in plain English and explain technical points directly. If something in your situation is genuinely complex, we'll say so — but we won't make things seem more complicated than they are.

How we maintain quality across our work

Thai Bar Association membership

All qualified lawyers at Ploy Law are members in good standing of the Lawyers Council of Thailand and adhere to its professional conduct rules.

Legal professional privilege

All advice and correspondence is protected. Client information is never disclosed outside the firm without explicit, informed consent.

Internal review process

Written advice and drafted arrangements are reviewed by a second qualified lawyer before delivery to the client. This reduces the risk of error and improves the quality of the final document.

Continuing professional development

All lawyers in the practice maintain their CPD requirements and keep current with developments in Thai family law and relevant international legal frameworks.

Secure document handling

Client documents are stored on encrypted systems with restricted access. Physical documents are kept in secured filing. We follow data protection standards appropriate to the sensitivity of family legal matters.

Transparent fee agreements

Fees are agreed in writing before work begins. We do not bill for work outside the agreed scope without first discussing it and obtaining consent.

Family legal work in Bangkok — what that actually involves

Thai family law covers a wide range of matters, from the formal registration of marriage and the recognition of foreign documents to the division of marital assets and the arrangement of care for children. At Ploy Law, we focus on the middle ground of this territory — the situations that have already moved past initial shock and now need practical legal structure.

Spousal maintenance in Thailand is governed by provisions under the Civil and Commercial Code. Whether you're seeking a review of an existing arrangement or working through a proposed settlement, the relevant factors include each party's income, assets, and reasonable needs. Our reviews are designed to give you a clear picture of where you stand under the law before you make any decisions.

Child living arrangements present a different kind of complexity. Thai law places the welfare of the child at the centre of any arrangement — but translating that principle into a practical, workable agreement between two parents requires careful work. We've helped many families in Bangkok reach arrangements that hold up in practice, covering not just the day-to-day but the details that tend to create friction later: holiday schedules, decisions about schooling, and how significant changes in circumstances are handled.

For families with cross-border ties, the work becomes more procedurally involved. We work with clients whose situations span Thailand and countries across Europe, Australia, and North America, among others. Each situation requires a proper understanding of which country's law applies to which aspect of the matter — something that can't be assumed and that changes depending on the specifics.
